Form [Counterform]

Form [Counterform]
We can find so much similarity between the hundreds of typeface varieties within a major classification – serif, sans-serif, script, etc.
What if we dig further to find the qualities that make an individual typeface unique?

Those formal qualities are "tasty bits."
Typeface and its tasty bits are created through the relationship of form and counterform.

This project was the exploration of seven typefaces and some tasty bits from six
chosen letters – all while maintaining a balance between form and counterform.
I used the strongest frame from each typeface to create a composition with
visual hierarchy and interest.

The final design was produced in B+W and CMY overprint format.

(below) Some of my documented process. For each typeface, I chose 6 letterforms and cropped my favorite tasty bits.
The bottom right photos show my final chosen letterforms + hierarchy, and another design concept I considered.
The winning composition! I named my design "3 Wishes" – inspired by Genie in Aladdin (1992). The CMY version further communicates the subject, as a characteristic of Genie is that distinctive blue color. My letterforms included a variety of
curved + elongated shapes, which helped give the composition some ascension and movement.
A book cover (jacket) mockup of my CMY design. I once again had to look for tasty bits, now in my composition, to determine what I wanted highlighted on the cover of the book. I incorporated the title into my design rather than making it static.
A mockup of my design as a blonde ale from "3 Wishes Brewing." This was a great opportunity to combine the application of both design versions!
A large-scale banner mockup of my design. The scale highlights the form + counterform and visual hierarchy.
A final tasty bit! A pillow mockup with focus on some of the most interesting overprinting effects in my CMY design.
